The Wild Turkey

The turkey in history

Endemic to the Americas, the wild turkey is a magnificent bird. The Aztecs domesticated this bird around 10th century BC.They consumed its meat and used the feathers for ornamental purpose. It is recorded that the Aztecs staged a festival every 200 days and traded around 1000 turkeys daily to the markets. By the time the Spanish conquistadors arrived in the Americas, the turkey was the staple meat for the Mayans, the Incas and the Aztecs. The Spanish took a liking for this bird and took it to Spain along with them. From there it spread to France and Italy. By the 16th century, the turkey was introduced in Britain where it still continues to enjoy popularity. It is said that the turkey was Benjamin Franklin’s choice for the United States’ national bird.

The Rook

Rook origin and appearance

Hailing from Eurasia, the Rook is a member of the crow family. The species has a striking resemblance to the Carrion Crow. The average length of the Rook is 45 to 47 centimeters. The jet black feathers bear a blue or bluish purple sheen in bright sunlight. They have dense and silky feathers on the head, neck and shoulders. The legs and the feet are black in color and the beak, grayish-black. A bare, grayish white skin around an adult Rook’s beak, distinguishes it from other members of the crow family. Collectively Rooks are known as parliament, clamor and the like.

These tiny mammals are generally 7 – 10 inches in length and weighs approximately 10 grams. They have a thick and bushy tail. It’s very soft and silky and varies in thickness from species to species. Since they have large eyes; squirrels are blessed with a powerful sense of vision. The body color of squirrels ranges from white to yellow and from red to brown or grey. Like any other rodents, their front teeth never stop growing. Predominantly herbivorous, squirrels feed on fruits, nuts and seeds. However, some wild varieties of squirrels are also known to feed on insects and eggs of other birds as well.
