What are fleas? How can the dog be treated once it is affected by them?
Fleas are very small, black, fast moving pests, less than two centimeters long, which feed on the dog’s blood. Fleas can easily jump from one dog to another and multiply at an amazing speed. Fleas hide in the dog’s bedding, carpets, sofas and such other furniture and articles. It is said that if a flea is found on a dog, another hundred may be hiding nearby. These transmit several diseases and are intermediate hosts for a certain variety of tape worms which infest dogs. They cause several skin diseases including allergic dermatitis. Flea control includes treatment of the dog, washing the dog’s bedding, vacuuming carpets, and cleaning other flea-infested articles. After vacuuming, the vacuum bag should be discarded at a distance far away from the house.
